Skywalk Project EASA 2014 Bulgaria
EASA 2014, Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria
Principal Architect: Matthieu Bordereuil | Structural Consultant: Stanislas Taboureau
The Skywalk Project was realized in 2014 as part of the European Architecture Students Assembly (EASA) in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria. This interdisciplinary initiative brought together architecture students, professional architects, engineers, and other specialists to explore innovative urban design strategies addressing social and environmental challenges such as congestion, pollution, and social inequality.
The project’s centrepiece is a striking cantilevered platform that extends over the edge of a cliff, offering visitors an immersive experience of the surrounding landscape. Constructed from two steel beams anchored to the cliff, the structure incorporates a steel railing with a glass panel at its terminus, seamlessly framing panoramic views. Patterned wooden walkways and a roof provide warmth and tactility, creating a balanced dialogue between materiality and the natural environment.
A new kiosk was also designed and installed, replacing the existing structure and complementing the platform both functionally and aesthetically. With a modest total budget of €15,000, the Skywalk Project demonstrates how careful design and collaboration can transform public space, enhancing social engagement and environmental awareness while providing a memorable, elevated experience of place.
