Located in Glasgow’s East End, the Wheatberry Baking School is a bright, contemporary interior created to celebrate the craft of baking and to shape an environment that encourages learning, experimentation, and joy. Designed for the founders of Wheatberry Bakery, the space blends industrial simplicity with the warmth of natural materials, daylight, and plants.

Spatial Strategy and Atmosphere

The interior is organised around a large central work island, which serves as both a teaching hub and a social core. This arrangement allows multiple participants to work comfortably side by side, fostering collaboration and clear visibility during workshops. Circulation flows naturally around the island, enabling the space to function both for structured classes and for more informal gatherings.

The material palette is intentionally calm and tactile:

• soft concrete tones,
• matte surfaces,
• natural wood accents,
• and restrained, clean-lined cabinetry.

These elements create a minimalist yet welcoming atmosphere that supports focus and creativity without visual noise. The clarity of the space mirrors the precision required in baking.

Light and Greenery

Suspended globe luminaires introduce a gentle, warm glow that softens the industrial character of the studio. Overhead greenery lines the space, adding texture, colour, and a sense of wellbeing. The plants visually connect the work areas and bring natural life into an environment centred around craft, nourishment, and community.
